Sinopsis
This book examines life and culture during Otago's gold rush in the mid-1860s during the reign of Queen Victoria. The author was an immigrant to the region, and his foreign, largely English, perspective colors his observations and experiences, which he presents alongside reflections on the social and economic landscape of the region during the period. The author highlights the rapid changes and remarkable growth of settlements such as Dunedin with the influx of fortune seekers, many of whom were young and male. The volume explores the power structures that emerged in Otago as well as the schemes, scams, and social mores that were commonplace during the rush. It also gives an account of the rash of new industries that sprang up as well as the exploitation of natural resources prompted by the sudden population boom. Rich in historical detail and anecdotes, the narrative provides a vivid account of the ups and downs of life on the goldfields and offers a glimpse into the emergence of the modern society of New Zealand's South Island.
