Michael Gold went on to identify himself with radical currents in the 1930s, and came close to a repudiation of his own works of the 1920s by averring that he only wanted to spit whenever he thought of the 1920s. He later saw his earlier work as a bulwark against reaction and a foundation for an authentic American novel. Like Ralph Ellison, with whom he was often identified, Gold was the writer of a singular claim to fame, which indeed was Jews Without Money.
