Elections.--In the election for a delegate in Congress 1894, there were 35,301 votes cast, of which the Rep. candidate (Catron) received 18,113; the Dem. candidate (Joseph), 15,351; and the Pop. candidate (Mills), 1,835; Rep. plurality, 2,762. The Dem. State Convention, held June 15, 1896, indorsed Richard P. Bland for the presidency, pronounced in favor of the free and unlimited coinage of silver and gold independent of the action of foreign nations, and instructed the delegates to the National Convention to support no candidate for the presidential nomination not in accord with this principle.
