Excerpt: Bunt (pronounced also spelled 'Bant' in former English usage, Tulu: , Kannada: , Malayalam: ) are a Hindu community of erstwhile nobility, feudatory and gentry from the region of Tulu Nadu in the south west of India which comprises the districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada in the Indian state of Karnataka and Kasaragod taluk of Kerala. The Bunts claim Kshatriya descent from the Nagavanshi lineage and are classified as Forward caste by both the Union and State governments of India. They traditionally follow a matrilineal system of descent and kinship like their related communities of Samantha Kshatriya and Nair but unlike them they were endogamous. The word Bunt is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Bhata' and means a powerful man or a soldier in the Tulu language. Sir H.A. Stuart in the Manual of South Canara district and Edgar Thurston in the book Castes and Tribes of Southern India state that the meaning of the word Bunt implies that the Bunts are 'Martial nobility' or 'Military Class' of the Tulu Na...
