First call was buying wedding presents for his wife. He loved walking about the town with her, making her look at all the pretty things in the shop windows, and saying they must and should be hers. But Gladys was too quickly satisfied: she wanted so little, and he wished to buy so much. "One more wedding present," he used to plead. "Something you would really like, and then I'll stop." The jewellers' shops might have supplied a wide arena for his energy, but here again he was unfortunately frustrated. At first he understood that all the Brentwood gewgaws had been left to Lady Emily, but a stupid letter, ...
