Not illustrated. 1900 Excerpt: ...a result of an alteration in the blood or blood-vessel walls, an extravasation of blood takes place into the tissues. After a variable period of time this undergoes resorption, the changes in the blood-pigment producing the varying colorations. The process is not attended with inflammation. Diagnosis.--The evident hemorrhagic nature of the lesions and their failure to disappear upon pressure distinguish them as purpuric. Purpura haemorrhagica may be confounded with scorbutus: Scorbutus. Purpura Hmorrhagica. 1. Occurs in those subject to lack I. No such etiologic relationship. of vegetable food and to bad hygiene. 2. Definite premonitory symptoms: 2. Premonitory signs slight or ab weakness, impaired circulation, sent. etc. 3. Onset slow. 3. Onset sudden. 4. Gums spongy, swollen, and bleed-4. Gums often bleeding but not ing; teeth loose. swollen. 5. Severe muscular pains. 5-Less marked. 6. Brawny infiltration of lower ex-6. Not present. tremities. 7. Hemorrhages from mucous mem-7. Hemorrhages from mucous mem branes not as a rule profuse. branes often so severe as to prove fatal. Prognosis.--In purpura simplex and rheumatica the prognosis is favorable, recovery taking place in several weeks or months. In purpura hsmorrhagica the prognosis is more guarded, a certain number of cases succumbing to internal hemorrhage. Treatment.--The treatment of purpura must be adapted to the exigencies of the individual case. Ergot, tincture of the chlorid of iron, quinin, turpentine, and the mineral acids are useful in all forms of the disease. In purpura rheumatica and haemorrhagica the patient should be confined to his bed and placed upon a nutritious and easily assimilable diet.
