MOM'S CHOICE AWARDS® GOLD MEDALIST 2016

INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER: The achingly sweet rhyming story of beloved Nola, the last American Northern White Rhino, who died during the writing of this book (her species is now extinct.) Mesmerizing watercolors cascade readers through a magnificent African savanna, dazzling in a palette of scorching reds, purples, pinks, and oranges as Nola is born and grows up under the loving gaze of her mother. Savanna friends watch Nola as she enjoys all the "firsts" of any child, and masters savanna life. Giggles abound as Nola munches grass and rolls in lovely mud, like all good rhinos do. The story bends soon after, and gently, delicately explains the Northern White Rhinos' plight: poaching, based on the fallacy that rhino horns are thought to possess magical medicinal powers. Extinction is an ugly word...yet Nola's soft rhymes expertly teach with commonsense defiance; a message that stays in little minds long afterthe story is over:

You Ask Why? The truth is this: Some want, what's not theirs (And there it is.) What To Do? Love what you've got!(And not what you don't) Matters a lot!

World leaders paused to mark Nola's death on November22, 2015, her name made headlines around the globe. Extinction is forever. *Book proceeds to San Diego Zoo Global.

SAD, SAD TEARS FOR NOLA FROM THE WORLD OVER AND US ALL:
--Debra Edgington

THIS IS TRULY A SAD DAY, NOLA A BEAUTIFUL CREATION OF GOD HAS NOW BEEN CALLED HOME: I had the pleasure of seeing Nola for almost the past three years, and each of them special. I will certainly miss her when I come back to the park next year. Nola you have now reached the gates of heaven and you will be welcomed in the loving arms of God. The angels will watch over you as you are now enjoying paradise, in where no one will hurt you. I love you Nola! It won't be the same without you, but your legacy will be eternal. Rest In Peace my love, for you are in the loving arms of the father, our creator. That was very hard to write as I fight back tears! I can't tell you how sad I am. I love you old girl!--Gary Pacheco

GOD BLESS YOU SWEET GIRL!: --Brandi Kelley

NOLA WAS INCREDIBLE: She stood for the many who were not brought into this world. The rhino was exploited for their horns. How sad what they did to them to gain money and fame for themselves. This leaving only the few to carry on their breed. Oh, to see these great animals in the wild would be a miracle into today's world of naturalist and earth's pollution and greenhouse effect. How truly sad for them and the many other species trying to survive in today's world. Love you Nola. Peace be with you in your new heavenly home. --Cindy Loftus

REST IN PEACE BIG GIRL: --Marcie Grasso

RHINOS ARE SUCH SPIRITUAL ANIMALS: Even in that last picture of Nola, she looked as if she understood everything in the world. The one rhino I had the pleasure of meeting, looked me right in the eyes. I swear they can see straight to the soul. And even if they can understand all the horrible things humans have done, they remain stoic and so gentle. Like they have already forgiven us. Such majestic creatures created by God himself. So sad we don't appreciate his gifts. I'm currently working on my RVT and hope to get a job at a wildlife rehab. Or at least take part in conserving what animals we have left. --Stevi Spear

RIP BEAUTIFUL NOLA!: --Naomi Lisby

ABSOLUTELY HEART BREAKING NEWS!: Absolutely! She will never be forgotten, same with those we have lost in such a short period, in the last 13 months -Suni, Angalifu, Nabire, now the beautiful Nola. Her memory will live on! Thanks to Safari Park, The Ol Pejeta Conservancy and the others working with them she will also live on through the reproduction efforts and the determination to bring back these incredible Northern White Rhinos! But today, it is all about you Nola, we love this sweet sweet Rhino.Into the future you will be a symbol of hope and what is good in this world! --Stephen Gustavson

CLEARLY SHE WAS LOVED!: Oh my, I'm so sorry for your loss. --Selene Joy Castrovilla

THIS BREAKS MY HEART: Even though I never saw her I loved her. My heart goes out to all of you. She will fear no more, she will play among the flowers and all that went before her. I will always remember you Nola, you were a bright star in our lives. --Pamela Burgess

I PRAY WE CAN TURN AROUND AND SAVE THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES: --Kimm Governo

THANKS TO ALL WHO MADE NOLA'S LIFE BETTER: For all who loved & cared for her in her life I am sorry for your loss. Run free & wild Nola.--Heather Byington

RIP BEAUTIFUL GIRL... --Maria Hallahan Mason

SUCH SAD NEWS: --Bridget Munger

SO SAD: Rest in peace, Nola! --Sonja Cisna Lancaster

THREE ON EARTH?? UNBELIEVABLE: That is so sad. I'm so sorry and thanks for all you do. --Heidi R. Kling

RIP NOLA, YOU'LL BE MISSED: --Dawn Parker

SAD, SAD DAY. --Carol Ferree Snyder

DEVASTATING NEWS: I just did a presentation on the rhino crisis and Nola was mentioned. Now just 3 of these magnificent creatures are left. RIP Nola. --Robin Scott Teller

RIP NOLA: We had the same birth year, which makes you that much more special to me! #Nola4ever --Sarah Boesen

R.I.P NOLA: I'm from Kalamazoo and I absolutely loved seeing every picture of Nola; I really wanted to come meet her... I hope she is up there in rhino heaven painting away. --Devin Seaman

THAT IS SO SAD: --Mary Gilmartin

SCHJøTH OOO NOOO!: --Lars Tue

RIP: --Laura Block

SENDING HUGS!: And that statistic is frightening! --Carol Weis

LOVE YA NOLA!: --Lee Haydn Straight

THIS LOSS IS INCONSOLABLE: And is our loss also that the statistic is dismal...The fragile things in this ecosystem are seldom our priority.--Said Leghlid

From the Back Cover:

Interview with Jane Kennedy, Lead Mammal Keeper, San Diego Zoo Safari Park--August 10th, 2015

1. What is your most memorable moment with Nola? Meeting Nola 26 years ago was amazing. While the Safari Park already had northern white rhinos and I had met them, I had never met a pair of females before. Both Nola, and her coalition partner Nadi, were so sweet. They were very gentle and they really wanted an interaction and love from the keepers. This is because, prior to coming to San Diego, these females were living in a traditional zoo where they had interaction with their keepers every day. Here at the Safari Park, we tend to let our animals live in a more naturalistic setting so that doesn't mean one-on-one interaction with rhinoceros'.

2. Is there something unique about Nola's personality that you would like to share? Nola trusts humans, this is why: Nola has to have pedicures. Nola's nails grow unusually long and they grow a little bit up, that means she has to have them trimmed regularly. If Nola had not been brought into a captive situation she might have died as a young animal because of her nails. She has an odd gait because the nails affect the way that she walks, kind of at footed. Unlike other rhinos, Nola isn't very fast. (Rhinos can run up to 35miles an hour, you know!)
Our team of keepers very carefully approach Nola and two or three of us will rub her back and ears and she'll stay laying down while the other team members trim her nails. We always have a truck right next to us for safety because after all, Nola is a 4,000-pound gentle giant! Because she has always had her nail issue, she has always had this attention from her keepers, even when she lived in the Czech Republic. She learned over her lifetime to trust keepers and to know that we are there to take care of her and to help her. Her nail trims have become a part of her regular routine. Nola has learned to trust humans because all of the humans she's met in her entire life have always loved her and taken care of her.

3. What is Nola's favorite activity? Nola's favorite thing to do is to be scratched and rubbed by her keepers! She loves it when we approach when she's lying down and we gently rub her. She loves to be scratched behind her ears and have her back rubbed with a scrub brush! She's an amazing animal.

4. How did Nola get her name? Nola was given her name at her first zoo . . . Ironically, the meaning of the name Nola is famous champion, and Nola is the feminine form of Nolan. She is a champion for her species!

5. Why do you love rhinos, personally? Rhinos are amazing prehistoric looking animals. When you first see them, they might scare you, but once you get to know them, you realize they're just gentle giants. Yes, they have power and strength, but they're also gentle. They're caring loving mothers, and the fathers here at the Safari Park play with their kids. Rhino bulls in the wild are also known to play with calves that they come across. Of course, the mother rhino is nearby to make sure things stay safe. It's easy to love and respect an animal that has that much power and that much grace and that much love to give.

Her unique sense of humor? The way she trotted up to her visitors st Safari Park, happily waving her head around as if to say, Hello.so glad you came! Perhaps it was her ancient age that had us in love with her, a matriarch with the endearing lined skin of a grandmother. Or maybe, it was her courage. Maybe this was why world leaders paused to mark her death on November 22, 2015. Why Nola s name made world headlines. Newspapers. Television. Internet. Nola, Nola, Nola. The very last of her kind. Extinction is forever. Nola knew this. She forgave us, I think. She only asks that we honor her story. It was a hot summer afternoon in August 2013, even for San Diego, yet my daughter and I barely felt the heat. We stood in our safari truck, gripping binoculars. Where was she? We had been traveling along the savanna for an hour now. Suddenly we heard heavy footsteps and a silhouette appeared on the horizon. Grey, rounded, enormous. There stood Nola! World famous northern white rhino, the very last of her kind here in America, one of four left on the planet, her species almost extinct. Nola! my eleven year old cried. At hearing her name, Nola sped toward our truck. Hearts thumping, cameras replaced binoculars. I leaned over the edge of the truck and looked into her eyes. How can I explain this moment? Deep-set, brown eyes that did not inch from mine. At all. I held my gaze and so did she. Are you afraid, I whispered. No, I am not, she seemed to say back to me, her ears uttering a little, her eyes deepening their stare. As our truck pulled away I said to my child, I m going to write Nola s story, Maddie.
