The Tangible Past in Athens, Georgia By A.Andrews, S.Brown, P.Cooper, G.L.Doster, Epting, T.Flynn, M.A.Hodgson, L.M.Leathers, C.T.Marshall, H.McAlexander, P.McCommons, S.Thomas & M.B.Warren. Edited by Charlotte Thomas Marshall. The collaboration of 13 writers and researchers which resulted in this handsome 656-page volume began in May 2010. It was embraced by lovers of Athens history who initially set out to write about houses moved from one location to another in our town The focus gradually spread to encompass the development of Athens' 19th century neighborhoods - the architecture, the residents, and the developing economy. Each participant chose his or her subject. We recognized that we are the inheritors of a wealth of knowledge from long-deceased mentors. We felt an obligation to commit to printed word that knowledge along with other information we have gleaned through our own activities and research. This is not a history of Athens, but it is full of Athens history. We've set forth what we know and have been able to learn. We both uncovered material and had it land unexpectedly in our laps. We early resolved to illustrate our book with images new to our readers. We weren't quite sure where we'd find them, but we were committed to the search. Many readers are going to find likenesses of their ancestors that they had no idea existed. We have located and used more than 700 images. The Tangible Past in Athens, Georgia is both a coffee table book and a resource book which will be long consulted because of the careful research that undergirds it. It is dedicated to those men who recorded the first 100 years of Athens history, by Dr. Henry Hull and his son, Augustus Longstreet Hull, on whose work many of us relied. A newly indexed edition of Annals of Athens has been issued by Mary Bondurant Warren and Heritage Papers.
