The Second Edition of the most complete best practices book available for designing and maintaining an effective alarm management system.
Abnormal situations in plants around the world kill and injure people, cause significant environmental harm, and cost the industry billions of dollars every year. Investigation reports on industrial accidents often point to faulty alarm systems as a contributing factor. Poorly performing alarm systems hinder an operator s ability to prevent accidents or minimize process upsets. Properly designed and maintained alarm systems significantly improve plant safety, reliability, and profitability.
The Alarm Management Handbook provides a field-proven methodology for improving the performance of industrial facility s alarm systems. It derives from over a decade of research and the lessons learned from hundreds of successful alarm improvement projects.
This highly anticipated new edition contains an additional fifty pages of information, new figures, and several completely new sections. It contains the most up-to-date body of best practices knowledge available for improving and optimizing the performance of a modern alarm system. There is additional practical information on benchmarking alarm system performance, developing a comprehensive alarm philosophy, solving nuisance alarm problems, performing alarm rationalization, implementing advanced alarm handling techniques, and improving the human factors associated with alarm systems. The implications of the new ANSI/ISA-18.2-2009 Management of Alarm Systems for the Process Industries are also detailed. Companies have achieved breakthrough results by following the principles contained in this book.
Whatever the nature of your alarm system, The Alarm Management Handbook is a necessary part of your operational excellence and other business improvement initiatives. This book will help you make a long-lasting mark in your organization by providing you with strategies to improve your company s bottom line.

Effective alarm management is an obligation not only to the employees operating our plants but also to the communities granting us our license to operate. Here is clear guidance for the technical expert who must implement an effective alarm management system and excellent insights for the manager who must justify the necessary investments.--Arthur R. Colwell, Senior Vice-President at BASF Corporation
Two decades ago, alarm management was an issue largely unrecognized in the petrochemical industry. Today we know that it is an essential element of any Process Safety Management system. This book captures the best of the practices and solutions that have emerged within the industry. It is comprehensive, but delivered in a concise and logical format that makes it easy to extract the how-to details. The Chapter One overview should be required reading for all individuals with management responsibility in Manufacturing, Engineering, and Process Safety within our industry.--Jim A. Conner, Vice President, Manufacturing at Celanese Chemicals
The Alarm Management Handbook is a very practical guide to implementation of an alarm management program, presented in the unique and entertaining style of Hollifield and Habibi. The 2nd edition provides much new information, and ties the guidance in the previous edition to the new ISA-18.2 standard.--Nicholas P. Sands, Process Control Engineer at DuPont; ISA-18 Co-Chair
