This quick reference guide uses a graphic format to rate the weather for 600 cities around the world. The cities are "among the more popular for vacations, business travel, or retirement with some other representative cities included." Each city's weather profile is divided into 24 half-month periods. Pleasant weather is rated from one to three stars, while circles represent less pleasant weather. For example, three stars signifies weather in the 70s to mid 80s with less rain and clouds, while a filled-in circle represents temperatures in the mid 40s and below. Cities with low humidity are evaluated using a different rating system. The profiles do not include average precipitation or snowfall levels. However, "rainy seasons" are indicated by shaded areas in a city's profile. Since this notation actually signifies precipitation of all kinds, it might better have been called "wet" season. The combined system of circles, stars, and shadings, with a different key used for low humidity cities, is difficult to interpret and uninformative. More useful are the weather charts found in books like Places Rated Almanac [RBB Ja 1 & 15 95] and Retirement Places Rated [RBB Ja 1 & 15 95], which concisely list average daily high and low temperatures and relative humidity for each month, annual rainfall and snowfall, as well as number of 90-degree days, freezing days, and precipitation days. The vacationers, business travelers, and retirees at whom Pleasant Weather Ratings is aimed can find more useful weather data (and other useful information) in these and other comparable sources, at a price that is only slightly higher. The book's additional features, including a rating score that evaluates a city's weather over a full year on a scale of "below average" to "excellent," a ranking list derived from these scores, and a winter beach weather summary, do not warrant its purchase. Library patrons will be better served by referring to titles like those mentioned above for weather information on popular travel destinations or to a source like Weather America [RBB O 15 96] for other localities.Review:
Frequent travellers will want to make this an essential home reference, while library purchasers will find it a frequently consulted reference: often overlooked in trips are weather considerations, yet vacationers often find it complicated to plan trips which are off-season yet in pleasant weather conditions. Here weather profiles and charts for cities around the world make it easy to enjoy at-a-glance monthly temperature and weather condition information. -- Midwest Book Review
