9780957424609: Diableries: Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell
From the Publisher:

A devilish 1860s sensation - finally unleashed on the 21st century! In France, around 1860, from the loins of a traditional national fascination with all things diabolical, was born a new sensation - a series of visionary dioramas depicting life in a strange parallel universe called ENFER - Hell - communicated to an eager audience by means of stereoscopic cards, to be viewed in the stereoscopes which had already become popular in the 1850s. This 3-D phenomenon, which fascinated a nation for 40 years, is now yours to share. This book, the fruit of half a lifetime's study by three impassioned authors, brings every one of the published Diableries into the 21st century for the very first time. Some of them are so rare that at the time of writing there is no known complete collection of the originals of these masterpieces. But this book enables all but two of the 182 scenes to be enjoyed just as their creators intended, in magnificent 3-D, using the high-quality patent OWL stereoscopic viewer supplied.

From the Publisher:

Brian May is one of the world's foremost collectors of Victorian stereo cards. He published his first book about these cards in 2009, A Village Lost and Found, which contained a complete series of stereo cards taken in a small Oxfordshire village, and was a huge success and the subject of a great deal of media attention. In this second book, the subject is of broader interest and is more controversial. Diableries (which translates roughly as 'Devilments') presents an extraordinary set of French stereo cards, which were originally published in the 1860s. They depict an imaginary underworld populated by devils, satyrs and skeletons which are very much alive and - for the most part - having fun. The cards are works of art in themselves, constructed in a special way to enable them to be viewed (in a stereoscope - which is supplied with the book).

Descripción London Stereoscopic Company, London, UK, 2013. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: None as issued. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. **SIGNED COPY** Brand New, Beautiful and Unread First Edition/1st Printing (Stated) in master Slipcase, includes individually slipcased Owl Stereoscope. This copy boldly hand signed directly to First Free Endpage by all three authors: May, Pellerin and Fleming. In his amazingly revitalized, reconstituted and marvelously interactive jaunt back to the quite wild and permissive, "Gay Paree" of--ironically enough--the ostensibly restrained Victorian era, Brian May's London Stereoscopic Company has newly released its first book on 19th century French stereoscopic cards, "Diableries: Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell," in which May first details his lifelong love of the cards and their odd visions of hell, and then proceeds to bring this antique 3-Dimensional technology to us in its laborious and lovingly restored format, the groundbreaking result of years of work by French photohistorian Denis Pellerin, in collaboration with Paula Fleming, American Photographic expert, late of the Smithsonian Institution, and May, Lead Guitarist of the legendary British Rock group, 'Queen.' The cards, called 'Diableries' (which translates roughly as 'Devilments') depict a whole imaginary underworld, populated by devils, satyrs and skeletons which are very much alive and, for the most part, having fun. The cards, which were made exclusively in France, beginning in the 1860s, and continuing on until around 1900, are works of art in themselves, and are known as FRENCH TISSUES, constructed in a special way to enable them to be viewed (in a stereoscope) illuminated from the front, for a normal 'day' appearance in monochrome, or illuminated from the back, transforming the view into a 'night' scene, in which hidden colours magically appear, and the eyes of the skeletons leap out in red, in a most macabre way. The book, a first printing, comes packaged with a stereoscopic viewer newly engineered by May and company, which allows the books illustrations to be seen in the 3-D manner for which they were originally designed, back in the late 1800s. [AND] Diableries: A Trip to the Underworld (19th Century Images of Satan and Hell) Copyright 2013 by Sun Vision Press and Candice Black. This highly detailed softcover black & white photographic treatment of The Diableries images 1-72 (Series "A") presents the complete series stereoptically explored by May, et al, in large (8.75" X 11") format. This Brand New volume makes an invaluable study aid, and serves as a splendidly detailed visual companion to May's marvelous Stereoscopic endeavor. These books are quite heavy, and will require additional shipping charges for expedited or international delivery. Ships FAST!! and securely (insured, in a well-padded box, including free domestic tracking) from Southern California. Signed by Author(s). Nº de ref. de la librería ABE11483B2

Descripción The London Stereoscopic Publishing Company, Surrey, London, 2013. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New Slip Case et al. Signed Limited Edition 29/250 Copies. Les Diableries was the title of a series of stereoscopic photographs published in Paris during the 1860s.The photographs, commonly known as stereoviews, portray sculpted clay vignettes which depict scenes of daily life in Hell. Much of the subject matter was satirical and mirrored the corruption and excess of Paris during the Second Empire. Napoleon III’s authoritarian rule was repeatedly the subject of criticism, as was the decadent lifestyle of the bourgeoisie. This is one of a Limited run of Deluxe editions. Is in New condition. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity with number 29 written in ink, alongside the Authors signatures: Brian May; Denis Pellerin and Paula Fleming. Bound in Italy in beautiful gold-tooled red vegan faux leather, gilt edged pages, custom head and tail bands and a captive page marke ribbon. There are other accompaniments: A decorated box of 12 LSC Diableries cards with foil eyes and the gold Owl Stereoscope. This is a unique high quality focussing stereo viewer, which packs into a space only 6 mm thick, yet assembles in 15 seconds into a high quality rigid instrument, which is equally at home sitting on a page to view stereo illustrations in a book, or used in the hand, to view stereocards. The Owl Stereoscope is house in a illustrated card folder, which is sized to stand beside the book in the decorative 3 D image to the Slip Box. See images soon after listing. This production is a testament to the hard work of the Authors, who have painstakingly gathered the images and background, which ensures that the history and appeal of these cards lives on. A highly desirable item. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Nº de ref. de la librería 021114
