9780957144248: A Passion Play: The Story Of Ian Anderson And Jethro Tull

In the summer of 1972 Jethro Tull hit the dizzy heights of number one in the Billboard album charts, and thus could lay claim to being the world's biggest band at the time, with Thick As A Brick. They repeated the feat the next year with A Passion Play and have sold over 60 million albums to date.

Considering just how big this group is (they are still going to this day, of course) there is surprisingly little written about them - only a couple of books, which is scandalous when you consider how many books have been written about their contemporaries .

This book is a gem containing interviews with band members such as Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, John Evans, Martin Barre and... of course Ian Anderson. In fact, this book may well contain the longest interview Anderson has ever given. Biographer Brian Rabey and Anderson really hit it off, possibly because Brian helped the latter recover his beloved harmonica which was stolen backstage - something Anderson never forgot.

Brian was given access all areas and used this wisely. Via new interviews he traces the history of a band which started life as the Blades, briefly included Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi (his plastic finger tips grafted on after an accident didn't lend themselves to playing Tull's subtle music!), and went on to become Prog Rock royalty (or Elizabethan Rock as they were sometimes dubbed!), but constantly re-invented itself with new personnel and styles.

Due to Brian's contact book there are also quotes from contemporaries such as Greg Lake and John Wetton, which really helps to put things in context. Another really appealing aspect of the book is that it looks at the landscape of the times - for example, the flat Tull lived in during the 1960s would be regarded as unfit for human habitation today.

A final nice touch is that several band members have sent photographs from their personal collections making this a unique book.

About the Author:

Brian Rabey has been a music journalist for over 30 years, working for over 60 publications, such as Toronto's Music Express in his native Canada. He has a BA in Communication Studies and has also worked as head Technician at Montreal's major theatre. He has played in bands since the age of twelve, but aged sixteen he first heard Jethro Tull's music and instantly bought a flute; learning the flute parts to all their songs.

Glenn Cornick: remembers: "By August of 1968 we were still in residency at the Marquee Club, at the same time developing a bigger following, which meant we were pulling in about 1000 people in a place which would normally hold 200. Clubs like that don't exist anymore. They were the sort of place that didn't have a bar and that once you got in you just didn't move; you just watched the band - that's all you could do. Still no press coverage at this point though."
Ian Anderson related his personal account of what he did in order to develop his stage act and the circumstances surrounding the development. This passage also includes a further description of the living conditions several of the band members were tolerating in order to play at night. Philosophies come into play a bit and give a little insight as to why some of those early theatrics came about, and, of course, the admission of actually holding-down a day job - a rare bit of history in itself.
Anderson: "Once we got going I was obliged to take a job part-time working in a cinema vacuum cleaning the floor. I worked in the mornings in an empty cinema which actually had a charm of its own and offered me a lot of time. In fact I vacuum cleaned the whole cinema once in about two days. Then for the rest of the month I worked there I didn't have anything to do everything looked so clean. So I was able to sit in the back circle most of the time attempting to write songs. It was actually a very useful time and it paid the princely sum of fifteen dollars a week on which I was able to live. I didn't live very well. You see it was in the middle of winter, the winter of 1967/ January 1968.
"In England in those days gas was used to heat and supply hot water and we had meters which used to supply the utilities. You would put coins in the meters, so when your coins ran out you ran out of utilities and I had about sixpence for the meter which had to supply heating, light, and hot water. In the middle of winter, sixpence does not go very far. I ended up being very cold. Interestingly enough that was where I first put on the prized possession with which my father had furnished me upon my leaving home a few weeks before which was a huge

Descripción Soundcheck Books, United Kingdom, 2013. Paperback. Estado de conservación: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. This is a book in two parts. Part one is a history of the band, largely told by band members themselves - Maartin Allcock , Mick Abrahams, Martin Barre, Clive Bunker, Glenn Cornick, John Evans, Andy Giddings. Jeffrey Hammond, Dave Pegg, Doane Perry, and, of course, Ian Anderson. Author Brian Rabey really did have access all areas for this work. He made good use of it as well, often relating the same story (for example, how Martin Barre came to join Tull) but from different people s viewpoints. Part two, is devoted to the thoughts of Ian Anderson, again largely told in the man s words in interviews that stretch back to Anderson s first meeting with Rabey in the 1970s, right up to the present. No stone is left unturned as Rabey explores Anderson s views on everything from how he writes songs, the music business itself and even his family (which is quite a rare thing for Anderson to discuss). We even get Anderson s view on two other musical geniuses - Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa. As well an official foreword from publicist Anne Leighton, the book contains mini forewords from ex-band members (Abrahams, Barre, Bunker, Giddings, Hammond and Perry) which really add to the sense of fun (this is a serious book but, like the band itself, humour is never too far away). Goodness knows what the future hold for Tull as a band - they haven t been together since 2011, though Ian Anderson is touring throughout 2013. However, it is 45 years since This Was making this book a timely reminder of what a great band Tull were/are/maybe will be again (delete as appropriate). Nº de ref. de la librería AAT9780957144248
