The primary aim of the book was to better inform casual users of DMSO about common safety concerns - real and imaginary. It is not in any way intended to provide professional medical advice on the use of DMSO for any particular applications, although it does report the results of well-documented applications in the extensive medical research literature on DMSO. At the time of writing I was in graduate school studying the history and philosophy of science, so I took the opportunity in the book to reflect on the curious reception that DMSO - a natural substance with pharmaceutical properties - received in some corners of the medical establishment. - I believe these reflection are helpful for the casual user to understand how and why such a safe and effective medical treatment option became controversial.

(Thomas Bristol is aka Terry Bristol) I worked with Dr. Stanley Jacob at the Oregon Health and Sciences University - on and off through my graduate school and overall for more than twenty years. Professor Jacob was 'the father of research into the medical applications of DMSO'. One of my assignments was to write the FDA application for several DMSO products eventually marketed as RIMSO-50 by Research Industries. The FDA application is quite extensive requiring me to review and summarize roughly 7000 peer reviewed articles in the Chemistry literature and another roughly 7000 peer reviewed articles in the Medical literature. Having completed this task and also being aware of the extensive use of DMSO by many people without any physician supervision, I decided to write this book. Working closely with Dr. Jacob over the years I was well aware of his candid recommendations, particularly on safety, for those who insisted on using DMSO without 'official' physician supervision.About the Author:
My legal name is Thomas Bristol, but my parents were slightly 'confused' when I was very young. They decided to call me Terry. So I have used both in various setting. I am currently, and since 1989, the President of the Institute for Science, Engineering and Public Policy, affiliated with Portalnd State University, in Oregon. isepp.org
