9780938960539: Through Japanese Eyes (Eyes Books Series)

Through Japanese Eyes shows us Japanese history and society through the eyes of a wide variety of Japanese (and a few non-Japanese) observers — male and female, young and old, novelists, poets, and journalists. With an emphasis on young people and their educations, this volume interweaves the historical and the contemporary, the laudatory and the critical, the domestic and the foreign. It demolishes all stereotypes of Japan and leaves students with a new appreciation of Japanese diversity. And it challenges students to ask the same questions of their own society that these Japanese are asking of Japan.

Sections with four to seven readings each treat "Japan before 1850," "The War Years," and "Japan Today." Sections with somewhat tighter focus treat "Textbooks and the Teaching of History," "Nature and Pollution," "Gender." A concluding section introduces the topic of "Japanese Americans." The text is accompanied by many boxes, photos, and charts. It is suitable for seventh grade and up. Varied, non-stereotyped; fascinating.

From the Publisher:

Thoroughly revised, this new edition does not try to explain Japan through "expert" analyses by outside observers. Instead it attempts to recreate the reality of everyday life by letting the Japanese speak for themselves. The former two-volume set has been combined into a single volume covering traditional and contemporary Japan and its economic, political, social, and cultural life. It draws on a variety of sources, including autobiographies, fiction, poetry, newspaper and magazine articles, letters, diaries, and historical documents. Illustrated, index.

About the Author:

Richard H. Minear is professor of history at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. A specialist in Japanese history, he is the author, translator, or editor of a dozen books. Most of them concern Japan. Japanese Tradition and Western Law: Emperor, State, and Law in the Thought of Hozumi Yatsuka (Harvard, 1970) and Victors' Justice: The Tokyo War Crimes Trial (Princeton, 1971) have been translated into Japanese.

He has served on the board of the Five College Center for East Asian Studies for many years. The Five College Center for East Asian Studies is a consortium of: Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA. In addition to the Center's commitment to undergraduate East Asian studies at the five institutions, it works to support, encourage, and improve the teaching of East Asian cultures in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, and two- and four-year colleges in the Northeast. It distributes high quality resources for teaching about East Asia at the college and pre-college levels, and to offers opportunities for pre-college educators to experience East Asian cultures firsthand. The Center maintains a Resource Library, publishes a newsletter three times a year, and conducts seminars, institutes, conferences, and workshops for college and pre-college educators, based at Smith College in Northampton, MA.
