9780934977371: Gaspara Stampa: Selected Poems

Gaspara Stampa (1523-54) is considered the greatest woman poet of the Italian Renaissance, and she is regarded by many as the greatest Italian woman poet of any age. A highly skilled musician, Stampa produced some of the most musical poetry in the Italian language. Her sonnets of unrequited love speak in a language of honest passion and profound loss. They look forward to the women writers of the nineteenth century and are a milestone in women's literature. This dual-language edition of selected poems presents, along with the Italian original, the first English translation of Stampa's work. It includes an introduction to the poet and her work, a note on the translation, and provides the reader with notes to the poems, a bibliography, and a first-line index. Dual-language poetry. Introduction, bibliography, first-line index.

About the Author:

Gaspara Stampa was born in Padua in 1523. After the death of her father Bartolomeo in 1530 Stampa's mother, Cecilia, moves with her three children to her native Venice. In 1548 at Christmas time Stampa meets Collaltino di Collalto who will be the focal point of many of her poems. In 1549, however, Collaltino leaves for France to fight against the English in the service of Henry II, king of France. In 1550 Stampa becomes a member of the Accademia dei Dubbiosi under the name of "Anaxilla." Toward the end of the year Collaltino again returns to Venice, and Stampa spends time with him at his estate, but by the end of the year, deeply depressed, she returns to Venice, marking the end of her relationship with Collaltino and the beginning of a new relationship with Bartolomeo Zen. Between 1551 and 1552, with improving health, Stampa enjoys a period of relative tranquillity. But the following year her health worsens, and she spends a few months in Florence hoping that the milder climate may cure her. She then returns to Venice, becomes ill with a high fever, and after fifteen days she dies on April 23, 1554. The register of her parish notes that she died of fever and colic, and of mal de mare (Venetian literally for disease of the matrix). In October, Pietrasanta publishes the first edition of Stampa's poetry, edited by her sister Cassandra.

Chi vuol conoscer, donne, il mio signore,
miri un signor di vago e dolce aspetto,
giovane d'anni e vecchio d'intelletto,
imagin de la gloria e del valore:
di pelo biondo, e di vivo colore,
di persona alta e spazioso petto,
e finalmente in ogni opra perfetto,
fuor ch'un poco (oim lassa!) empio in amore.
E chi vuol poi conoscer me, rimiri
una donna in effetti ed in sembiante
imagin de la morte e de' martri,
un albergo di f salda e costante,
una, che, perch pianga, arda e sospiri,
non fa pietoso il suo crudel amante.

If, ladies, you desire to know my lord,
Look for a gentleman with sweet expression,
Though young in years, old in his intellect;
Image of valor and of warlike glory;
His hair is blond, and his complexion light,
He's tall in stature, with a manly chest,
Seeming perfection in his every act,
But, ah, in love not faithful to his word.
If you should care to know me, you might see,
A lady in her manner and appearance
Like Death herself and every kind of sorrow,
An inn of steady faith and constancy,
One who, for all her tears, her ardent sighs,
Can win no pity from her cruel lover.
