The book included a detailed history of the idea of amateurism in sports. The author made a comprehensive study of the philosophy and history of the concept going back to the ancient Olympics. Anyone interested in the history of the Olympics will appreciate this book.

Eugene Glader was born in Cambridge, Minnesota in 1934. He received a B.A, degree from Wheaton College in 1955, an M.A. from the U. of Minnesota in 1960 and a Ph.D. from the U. of Iowa in 1970. His doctoral dissertation was entitled "A Study of Amateurism in Sport." From 1961 t0 1981 He taught and coached at Bethel U. in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1972 he was granted a scholarship to attend the International Olympic Academy in Greece. From 1981 to 2004 he and his wife owned and operated Cascade Lodge in northern Minnesota.
