The purpose of this guide book is to help the reader get the most out of traveling in Japan and to discover, not the "real" Japan, (after all, traffic congestion in Tokyo is just as "real" as rice paddies in the country-side), but the heart or essence of Japanese culture. The best way to do this, and the way that many Japanese have chosen for centuries, is to walk. Not surprisingly, this turns out to be not only enjoyable but the most economical way to see the country.
