9780895033727: Communicative Practices in Workplaces and the Professions: Cultural Perspectives on the Regulation of Discourse and Organizations (Baywood's Technical Communications)

Bringing together prominent scholars from a variety of disciplines, "Communicative Practices in Workplaces and the Professions: Cultural Perspectives on the Regulation of Discourse and Organizations" offers readers an engaging set of essays on the complicated relationship between discourse and the many institutions within which people act. Each author brings a unique theoretical perspective to conceptualizing how discourse is regulated and how it regulates when human activity is organized for such purposes as work or belonging to a profession. Together, the contributors to this collection offer a provocatively complex picture of what regulation means and the means of regulation.

About the Author:

ABOUT THE EDITORS Mark Zachry is Associate Professor of technical communication at the University of Washington and is editor of Technical Communication Quarterly. Zachry's research focuses on the rhetorical practices of organizations, particularly as those practices shape and are shaped by technological change, regulation, and organizational power. His research has been published in various journals and in edited collections. He is currently researching the modeling of the communicative and mediational aspects of knowledge work in organizations. Charlotte Thralls is Professor in the Department of English at Western Michigan University. She is the author of numerous articles and coeditor of Professional Communication: The Social Perspective (Sage, 1993). Her research has been recognized by awards from the National Council of Teachers of English and the Association for Business Communication. Thralls was founding coeditor of the Journal of Business and Technical Communication and was coeditor of Technical Communication Quarterly

Review:

"This collection offers a unique and provocative discussion of regulatory power in organizational communicative practices, avoiding the too-common treatments of such power as abstract, external, determinant, and unidirectional, and reconceptualizing both regulation and agency as distributed, contingent, improvisational, and mutually conditioning. Although using varied theoretical traditions and methodological approaches, the chapters in this volume collectively show how regulation and agency emerge through discursive interaction and how the study of this interaction can simultaneously examine larger sociocultural structures and processes and microdiscursive practices and features. Scholars from a range of fields including technical and professional communication, rhetoric, communication studies, cultural studies, sociology, psychology, and science and technology studies--will find this collection useful to their theorizing and research." --J. Blake Scott, Associate Professor, University of Central Florida

"As a quick glance at the table of contents of Communicative Practices reveals, the researchers that Zachry and Thralls have brought together for this collection represent some of the best thinkers in the fields of business and professional communication. But what distinguishes this book is the conversation it will stimulate on theories and practices of communication. The book should be required reading for all researchers and doctoral students in business and professional communication." --Janis Forman, Professor, UCLA Anderson School of Management
