It is a pleasure to present to North American students of Spanish the Latin American prize novel of 1941. To reduce it to textbook length was not an easy task, but fortunately it was possible to keep the major theme intact. Certain chapters of the original novel, although they contain some of Alegria's most readable narration, could be pruned away without disrupting the continuity of the remainder. In order to preserve a smoothly articulated story it was necessary to make a few very minor changes in incident; these alterations in no wise distort the author's purpose or message. We believe the text can be read to best advantage in the third year of college study, or perhaps at the end of the second year. the volume contains a 65 page vocabulary.
