This superbly researched and illustrated monograph accompanies an Amon Carter Museum exhibition of the pictorial documentation of the first war (indeed, the first major event) witnessed by the camera. Historical prints and daguerreotypes are combined with Ben Huseman's detailed catalog entries for each image in a chronological arrangement that provides a visual history of the conflict. Rick Stewart's essay provides biographical information on the artists and reporters who documented the war, while Sanweiss traces the provenance of two collections of Mexican War daguerreotypes, both by unidentified photographer(s). By painstakingly investigating early photography in that region, she uncovers the possible source of these early war photographs. This scholarly work is one of the five or six most important books published during photography's sesquicentennial year. Recommended for history, art, and photography collections.
