Lawrence S. Lerner, Ph.D., California State University, Long BeachDepartment - Physics and AstronomyLawrence S. Lerner has been a member of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at California State University, Long Beach since 1969. There he has taught physics, history of science, and many interdisciplinary courses. Earlier, he held research positions at Hughes Aircraft Research Laboratories, working mainly in condensed-matter physics. A native of New York City, he attended Stuyvesant High School. After the eleventh grade, he entered the University of Chicago, where he earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.Lerner has been honored with his university's Distinguished Teacher Award and three other awards of merit. He has been active for many years in efforts to encourage more young women to enter the sciences and engineering. He has served as Director of Cal State's General Honors Program and a Founding President of the campus Phi Beta Kappa chapter and is a member of the National Faculty for the Humanities, Arts, and Sciences.Lerner's current research centers on history of science and science education. He is the author of more than a hundred scholarly papers, two textbooks, and a translation of a work by Giordano Bruno.
