Kindergarten-Grade 3-- A series that utilizes the personalized approach of Krementz' "A Very Young . . ." books (Knopf), but for a younger audience. Each volume begins with a one-page profile of a person involved in the sport. The gymnast is female; the race car driver and motorcyclist are male. Large, clear full-color photographs with one or two sentences of text follow the individuals through some typical activities associated with the sport. Completing each volume is a one-page "Facts about . . ." assortment of some historically significant events and records in the sport; simple glossaries and indexes include sport-specific terms and references to very general terms such as "floor," "gasoline," and "helmet." Gymnastics displays a meet floor diagram identical to the one in Barrett's Gymnastics (Watts, 1988), for a slightly older audience. Motor Racing is the only current title on this level that features Formula 3 competition. The cycle diagram in Motorcycling contains a couple of British spellings, but is otherwise accurate. Motorcycling depicts racing on a paved circuit only, while details of speedway racing, sidecar, motorcross, and hillclimbing are colorfully pictured and described in Stewart's Motorcycle Racing (Crestwood, 1988). --Ann G.
