Yeomans (architecture, U. of Manchester) recounts how the trussed roof was introduced in Britain during the 17th century by Inigo Jones and Christopher Wren, and how it developed during the 18th and 19th centuries. He also reviews the roofing forms it replaced, and how its success was due to its ability to support the longer spans and shallower pitches of the architectural styles then becoming popular.
