9780857053763: No Picnic on Mount Kenya
Review:

'A most extraordinary and well-written prisoner-of-war and escape story' New Yorker.

'A tale worth reading ... Mr Benuzzi's paradoxical mixture of pride and self-mocking humility is attractive; his courage is amazing; his story dramatic' New York Times.

'A wonderful story of crazy courage that warms the heart!' Library Journal.

From the Publisher:

Imprisoned in a British P.O.W. camp in East Africa in 1943, Felice Benuzzi and his Italian comrades looked out onto the beautiful Mount Kenya, a symbol of everything that was beyond the grasp of their daily drudgery.

For Felice, though, this was a temptation too far. Using only equipment manufactured from what was available in the camp, and stockpiling their meagre rations, Felice and two friends planned a daring escape past armed guards, and attempted to scale the 17,000 foot mountain.

Encountering threats from rhinos and leopards, and risking perilous falls, deadly temperatures and starvation, this is an astonishing true story of courage and adventure; of three men who decided, in the midst of the horrors and banalities of the Second World War, that they had a mountain to climb.

Descripción Quercus Publishing, United Kingdom, 2015. Hardback. Estado de conservación: New. 220 x 146 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book. In the shadow of Mount Kenya, surrounded by the forests and creatures of the savannah, life drags interminably for the inmates of P.O.W. Camp 354. Confined to an endless cycle of boredom and frustration, it is little wonder when one prisoner realises he can bear it no longer. When the clouds covering Mount Kenya part one morning to reveal its towering peaks for the first time, Felice Benuzzi is transfixed. The tedium of camp life is broken by the beginnings of a sudden idea - an outrageous, dangerous, brilliant idea. There are not many people who would break out of a P.O.W. camp, trek for days across perilous terrain before climbing the north face of Mount Kenya with improvised equipment, meagre rations, and with a picture of the mountain on a tin of beef among their more accurate guides. There are probably fewer still who would break back in to the camp on their return. This is the remarkable story of three such men. No Picnic on Mount Kenya is a powerful testament to the human spirit of revolt and adventure in even the darkest of places. Nº de ref. de la librería AA69780857053763
