Well-known artist and children's book author and illustrator Sally Huss puts a unique twist on the familiar expression, "I love you with all my heart," by gently conveying the many ways a mother loves her son through her Hearts of Care, Hearts of Laughter, Hearts of Sorrow, Hearts of Pride, and Hearts of Peace.
Thereare many ways to love, and many ways of love that you may not have thought of.
Within each person, there is a heart for every job or task forwhich a heart could possibly be asked
Here are some of the ways I have loved you. . . And the ways I still do.

PreSchool-Grade 1 In this pair of purpose-driven books, a mother describes her love for her children. Each distinct feeling "Care," "Laughter," "Sorrow," "Pride," and "Peace" is connected to events in the child's life and tied to a particular verse from the International Children's Bible, New Century Version (Word Publishing, 1988), quoted in the last pages. The two short books are almost identical save for a few pages showing different dress-ups and roles in the school play. In each, the child is bathed, fed, and cherished as an infant; and hugged, cared for, and consoled as a small child. Son and daughter weep as they say good-bye to best friends before a move, spend time playing with their grandpa, and experience disappointment at not being able to buy a new bicycle. The illustrations are bright and cheerful, done in a scribbly, lively cartoonlike style depicting the smiling blond boy and girl interacting with children of different ethnic backgrounds. The texts are written in uneven verse, often with forced rhymes and limping meter that are difficult to read aloud. While these titles may meet the needs of parents looking for Christian books to share with their children, they are presented from an adult viewpoint, and it is difficult to imagine most youngsters responding to whatever sentimental appeal they may hold.
