In earlier centuries, still-life painting was not as highly regarded as portraiture or history painting, with its often heroic themes of war. In this century, however, the still life has progressed far beyond the traditional arrangements of fruits and flowers. Showcasing 65 paintings from the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this volume chronicles the development of American still-life painting, from 1915 to the present. Many prominent artists, including Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jim Dine, Franz Kline, and Marsden Hartley, have incorporated unconventional iconography, subject matter, and painting techniques into the genre, enriching it with layers of meaning previously unavailable to earlier artists. Each painting is fully described in commentary by the authors and reproduced in full color. From Library Journal:
Published to accompany an exhibit from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art that will travel around the country over the next two years, this catalog is a fresh and attractive sampling of 20th-century American still-life painting and photography. These are not just works that fit the traditional definition of still life, however. The authors use an expanded sense of the term to include everything from images of a corpse on a morgue table to an empty blanket spread on the grass. Some of the century's most famous artists are represented, but most of the 66 works are by less-well-known painters. The introductory essay and descriptive notes on each painting highlight the relationship between still life and both abstraction and figure drawing in our century. This volume is suitable for a wide audience, from browsers to specialists, and should be of interest to students. For most art collections.?Kathryn Wekselman, Univ. of Cincinnati Lib.
