9780826304360: The Way to Rainy Mountain

First published in paperback by UNM Press in 1976, The Way to Rainy Mountain has sold over 200,000 copies.

"The paperback edition of The Way to Rainy Mountain was first published twenty-five years ago. One should not be surprised, I suppose, that it has remained vital, and immediate, for that is the nature of story. And this is particularly true of the oral tradition, which exists in a dimension of timelessness. I was first told these stories by my father when I was a child. I do not know how long they had existed before I heard them. They seem to proceed from a place of origin as old as the earth.

"The stories in The Way to Rainy Mountain are told in three voices. The first voice is the voice of my father, the ancestral voice, and the voice of the Kiowa oral tradition. The second is the voice of historical commentary. And the third is that of personal reminiscence, my own voice. There is a turning and returning of myth, history, and memoir throughout, a narrative wheel that is as sacred as language itself."--from the new Preface

Descripción University of New Mexico Press. Softcover. Estado de conservación: New. 25th Anniversary Edition.. 104 pages. Softcover. New book. NATIVE AMERICANS. Long ago, the Kiowa Indians began a journey from the headwaters of the Yellowstone River in what is now western Montana to their present home in the southern Plains. In the course of that migration a cultural and psychological revolution occurred. The Way to Rainy Mountain recalls the journey of Tai-me, the sacred Sun Dance doll, and of Tai-me's people in three unique voices: the legendary, the historical, and the contemporary. It is also the personal journey of N. Scott Momaday, who on pilgrimage to the grave of his Kiowa grandmother, traversed the same route taken by his forebears and in so doing confronted his Kiowa heritage. It is an evocation of three things in particular: a landscape that is incomparable, a time that is gone forever, and the human spirit, which endures. 6 x 9.25 inches, 104 pages, 11 drawings. N. Scott Momaday won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1969 for his novel House Made of Dawn. Several of his books are available from UNM Press, including The Way to Rainy Mountain. He lives in Santa Fe. "Written with great dignity, the book has something about it of the timeless, of that long view down which the Kiowa look to their myth-shrouded beginnings." -- The New York Times "Mr. Momaday retells the Kiowa myths that he learned from his grandmother, speculates on the actual history they may symbolize, and describes, with infectious nostalgia, the Indian life he knew as a child. There are distinctive illustrations by the author's father, Al Momaday. The whole book is most attractive; beautifully written, full of gentleness and dignity." --Atlantic Monthly "It is a beautiful book; honest, unique, dignified, and told with a simplicity that approaches the purest poetry. It is a book for all seasons, for all readers." --Choice (Key Words: N. Scott Momaday, Pulitzer Prize Winners, Al Momaday, American Indian Literature, Native Americans, Anthropology, Kiowa Indians). book. Nº de ref. de la librería 87398X1
