The son of Czechoslovakian émigrés, JARKA BURIAN grew up in New Jersey, with Czech as his first language. He received numerous grants and special awards from the United States Institute of Theater Technology for articles on Czech scenography and for The Scenography of Joseph Svoboda (Wesleyan, 1971). Author of many studies on modern theater, Burian (Ph. D. Cornell University) is a professor of theater at the State University of New York, at Albany.
