More than anything second grader Robert wants a dog, but he can’t persuade his parents to agree. A pet-sitting service is the compromise, and the adventures begin as his first client is a classmate with a pet tarantula. Robert takes on birds, cats, and even a rabbit who turns out to be an escaped TV star. One day a stray dog shows up in Robert’s backyard, and his parents give him permission to take care of it until it’s adopted. The task turns out to be more than he bargained for. Uplifting and funny, this story will have readers rooting for this endearing, less-than-perfect child whose heart is in the right place even when the rest of him isn’t.

Gr 2-3-Robert Dorfman is back in this humorous story about his quest for a dog. He convinces his parents to let him start a pet-sitting service, and this adventure is off and running, crawling, and hopping as the second grader cares for birds, cats, a tarantula, rabbits, and, at long last, a dog. The business has its own share of near disasters with lots of amusing incidents to keep readers chuckling. The boy does not get his own pet, for now anyway, but he does show his parents that he can handle responsibility. Brewer's pen-and-ink drawings create satisfying visual interest throughout the story. Beginning fiction readers who have made friends with such characters as Julian and Junie B. will enjoy this story.
