Gary Bukovnik's (b. 1947) world is filled with flowers: iris, narcissus, rhododendron, tulip, bird of paradise all come within his view, and all form subjects for his art. Bukovnik's favored medium, is watercolor, although he is also a master at monotypes. And in watercolor, a delicate and unforgiving discipline, Bukovnik works large, daringly large. Imagine a poppy blossom over three feet high; think of a bird of paradise plant the runs across sheets of paper, if five feet tall and spans eighteen feet. These awesome works, moreover, are painted direct from nature without benefit either of photographic projection or preliminary sketches. In Bukovnik's work it is as though the meticulous precision of traditional botanical illustration is mixed with modern-day super-realism. The results are not only explosive, but immaculately beautiful paintings. In this book, the first published collection of Gary Bukovnik's watercolors and monotypes, flowers take on new meanings; more than simply plants in nature, they become tapestries, exotic garments, and grand embellishments of an artist's imagination. Accompanying the reproductions of Bukovnik's work is a foreword by James J. White, curator of art at the Hunt Institute for botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh; an interview with the artist by Robert Flynn Johnson of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; and an essay about Bukovnik and the depiction of flowers in art by Judith Gordon, a San Francisco-based writer.
