9780805855111: The Cognitive Artifacts of Designing

In this dynamic review and synthesis of empirical research and theoretical discussion of design as cognitive activity, Willemien Visser reconciles and integrates the classical view of design, as conceptualized by Herbert Simon's symbolic information processing approach, with modern views of design such as the situativity approach, as formulated by Donald Schön. The author goes on to develop her own view on design, in which design is most appropriately characterized as a construction of representations.

The Cognitive Artifacts of Designing takes seriously the idea that design research warrants development in the cognitive sciences, and Visser lays the groundwork for the integration of design research and cognitive science. This seemingly simple framework -- designing is the construction of representations -- has implications that set the stage for this mutually beneficial integration.

This volume will be of great interest to scholars concerned with design -- not only in cognitive design studies, but also in design methodology and engineering -- as well as cognitive scientists who are interested in problem solving in 'the real world.' Cognitive ergonomists and design practitioners will also be richly rewarded by a close reading of this volume.

About the Author:

Since 1986,Willemien Visserhas been working at INRIA-Rocquencourt (National Research Institute for Computer Science and Control). She is currently a senior researcher in the EIFFEL2-"Cognition & Cooperation in Design" research group. She has been studying design for more than 20 years, focusing on its dynamic, cognitive aspects. Visser comes from cognitive psychology where traditionally research is being conducted in artificially restricted conditions. Against this background, she has claimed the necessity to examine design in real, professional projects. Her professional memberships and services include: president of IJCAI'93 Workshop "Reuse of designs: an interdisciplinary cognitive approach"; co-organizer of ECCS'95 and '97 First and Second "European Conference on Cognitive Science"; of the "User- Centred Design" workshop at the International Conference in honor of Herbert Simon (Lyon, 2002); of the COOP 2000 workshop "Analysing and modelling collective design"; cochair of CHI'2000 Student posters. Visser has been INRIA Partner leader in several industrial research contracts (with CNET, Aérospatiale, Renault) and research projects funded by the French Ministry of Research. She has been the advisor of four Ph.D. students in cognitive ergonomics and in cognitive psychology, co-advisor of one Ph.D. student in computer science, and advisor of some 15 university apprenticeships in cognitive psychology and, as co-advisor, in software engineering. She has published more than 65 research papers (19 in international journals, six as book chapters).
