9780804835893: Chinese Children's Favorite Stories

Chinese Children's Favorite Stories is a delightful selection of thirteen Chinese folktales as told by author-illustrator Mingmei Yip. Inspired by her father's nightly story-telling adventures when she was a child, Yip hopes that by "retelling some of these thousand-year-old Chinese stories," she can pass along Chinese folklore and fables to many readers.

Children will also enjoy Mingmei Yip's other collection of Chinese Children's Stories: Grandma Panda's China Storybook.

Retold for an international audience, the beautifully illustrated stories will give children aged five to ten in other countries a glimpse into both the tradition and culture of China. The Children's Favorite Stories series was created to share the folktales and legends most beloved by children in the East with young readers of all backgrounds in the West. In Chinese Children's Favorite Stories, discover the many delightful characters--from a monkey and fairy, to ghosts and frogs--in stories such as:

  • The Mouse Bride
  • Dream of the Butterfly
  • The Ghost Catcher
  • The Frog Who Lived in a Well
  • How the Fox Tricked the Tiger
  • The Monkey King Turns the Heavenly Palace Upside Down

About the Author:

Mingmei Yip began writing and painting during her childhood in Hong Kong. Her first newspaper article was published when she was fourteen; the next year she was admitted to the prestigious Hong Kong Chinese Contemporary Artists' Guild, becoming its youngest member. A show of her paintings was held in New York City, where she lives, in Fall of 2002.

Review:

"Children will be drawn by the abundant colorful illustrations and the short, straightforward retellings." —Booklist

"Yip's paintings emulate classic Chinese silkscreen renderings, especially the serene nature images of "The Frog Who Lived in a Well." —Publishers Weekly

"Yip's writing is clear and accessible to children, and the bright pastel illustrations are appealing." —School Library Journal

"Beautifully illustrated, the book is geared towards children ages five to ten. For the younger set, parents can read the stories to them which are sure to stimulate their imaginations." —Bicultural Mama blog

"The book is well illustrated with beautiful pictures and the quality of all of Tuttle's books is there. The books are just simply gorgeous. I cannot say that enough...The illustrations help take the reader to the time and place of the story but also leaves room for the reader's imagination to complete it as well." —Crafty Moms Share blog
