9780801874086: Federalism and Territorial Cleavages

One of the most vexing problems facing developing countries is how to integrate regions with different traditions and minority groups into a larger sovereignty. The failure to resolve this problem can lead to ongoing conflict, and such conflict has been seen to reemerge even in established states. Ugo M. Amoretti and Nancy Bermeo bring together a distinguished group of scholars to analyze the successes and failures of federalism in advanced industrial democracies, developing countries, and post-communist regimes. From these diverse examples the contributors and volume editors draw important lessons for all states that today face problems of government relating to territories and minorities.

Advanced industrial democracies studied in this volume include Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, and Spain. Cases of developing and post-communist states include India, Russia, Turkey, Mexico, and Nigeria. Chapters on individual states are supplemented by others on particular issues related to institutional design, such as the effects of different electoral systems, secession movements, and the limitations of the United States as a model.

About the Author:

Ugo M. Amoretti is a lecturer in political science at the University of Genoa, Italy. Nancy Bermeo is a professor of politics at Princeton University.

I found it to be an often fascinating book dealing with an extremely important, timely, and under-explored topic. I think this is an extraordinarily strong volume that will make a major impact on the field.

(Richard Gunther, The Ohio State University)

By bringing together well-known experts on federalism and regional studies, the editors of this broadly ambitious volume seek to uncover why some states accommodate territorial cleavages more successfully than others.

A useful collection of very diverse cases of federalism for those wishing to start exploring the topic.
