Usher Abell was born in 1915 and grew up in Paducah, Kentucky. He received his Bachelor of Music in Education degree from Murray State University in Kentucky in 1938 and his Master's Degree in violin from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1942. Between these periods of schooling he taught high school music in Gideon, Missouri in 1938 and was an instructor at Quachita College from 1939 to 1942. After serving as a musician in the Navy from 1942-1945, Usher joined the University of South Dakota as a violin instructor in 1946. He was named Chairman of the music department at USD in 1952 and retired in 1976 after 31 years.
Usher is a lifetime member of Phi Mu Alpha, is a member of ASTA, and served as the first president of South Dakota Music Teachers Association from 1955 to 1958. He was elected vice-president of the West Central Division of MTNA in 1958, and elected president of that division in 1960. He was a member of SDME for many years and served as orchestra chairman and later as auditions chairman for all-state orchestra for many years. He was also the chairman of the South Dakota National Federation of Music Clubs student auditions for 20 years.
Usher's performace experience is varied, including 31 years with the Sioux City Symphony. He has also played with the Lewis and Clark Orchestra, Omaha Symphony, and the South Dakota Symphony. Usher conducted the University of South Dakota Orchestra for 25 years. Solo performances include many recitals at the University of South Dakota, performances with the Sioux City Symphony and USD Orchestra performing jazz idiom selections, and many programs with piano and instrumental groups. He was key in getting the Arne B. Larson "Shrine to Music" Museum collection for USD in 1966.
Abell has published band music with Carl Fischer, Inc. and solo violin music with Mel Bay Publications, Inc. In addition to music, he enjoys gardening, hunting, fishing, and collecting antique cars.
