'Exploit your limitations' was the most profound advice ever given by the great jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. 'TOTAL GILTRAP' is a prime example of this. Indeed, Giltrap himself is a living example of an artist who has exploited his limited, right hand pick and little finger technique to its nth degree. In this volume, we explore open tunings, legato technique, two-handed tapping and the harp-like technique of open strings and harmonics. This is all wrapped up in a very English approach to melody and invention. All the techniques and pieces in the book are featured on an accompanying CD. All the examples are recorded at half tempo and full tempo, making it a very easy to follow guide. 'TOTAL GILTRAP' is a snapshot of ideas ready to be 'exploited' and developed by the willing and imaginative student of the modern day acoustic guitar.

Although Gordon Giltrap was born in Kent in 1948, he was brought up in Deptford south east London. He acquired his first guitar at the age of 12. For a few years prior to that, all he had was a 4 string plastic instrument with a picture of Elvis on the headstock which purported to be a musical instrument. His main influences were Hank Marvin, The Beatles, Pete Townshend, Bert Jansch, John Rebourn, John Williams, and Julian Bream. Gordon was a self taught guitarist who developed a hybrid right-hand technique of plectrum and little finger which eventually led to his own distinctive sound. The above few facts don t really reveal much about the man. It is impossible to cram over 40 years into a small space, years which along with the composing of so much music, have been filled with album releases, tours, and collaborations with such diverse names as the L.S.O., the jazz virtuoso Martin Taylor, the classical guitarist Raymond Burley, Ric Sanders of Fairport Convention, through to rock stars like Brian May, Midge Ure, Rick Wakeman, and Steve Howe. There is also Gordon s significant roll as the troubadour in Sir Cliff Richard s dream child Heathcliff ; for which Gordon arranged the overture and wrote two pieces of music. Critically acclaimed from 1968 to the present time, he has released 22 albums plus numerous compilations. Guitarists are a breed apart and all have a respect for each others abilities. Respect is the keyword here it is earned and cannot be bought. Gordon Giltrap has earned that respect from many of the legends of the guitar world names like Jimmie Page, Brian May, Ritchie Blackmore, Mark Knopler and many more who recognize the unique talent that is Gordon Giltrap. 2003 saw the release of his first performance DVD which goes some way towards capturing the magic, charm, and virtuosity of one of this country s national treasures. His music defies categorization but the watchword has always been melody. He refuses to live on past glories and genuinely wants to break new ground with each new album release.
