Veteran writer and editor Roger Stern wrote well-received runs of Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America and Doctor Strange, among other titles. During his ASM run, he introduced Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau), the Hobgoblin (Roderick Kingsley) and other major Marvel figures. West Coast Avengers is just one of his contributions to the franchise; others include a long stint as monthly writer and work on multiple miniseries: Avengers Forever, Avengers Infinity, Avengers Two and X-Men vs. Avengers. His graphic novel Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment provided major developments for Marvel's most prominent super villain. At DC, Stern was a core Superman writer in the post-Crisis era, best known for his role in one of comics' most shocking events: the 1992 "Death of Superman" saga. He also wrote the short but acclaimed series Power of the Atom and Starman. His later work includes scripts for European publishers Egmont and Panini UK, as well as Dynamite Entertainment. He has written three Superman novels.
John Buscema (1927-2002) literally wrote the book on being a Marvel artist --- namely, How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way --- and few were better qualified than the man remembered as one of Marvel's most prolific pencilers for more than three decades. Although his comic-book career dates back to the Timely/Atlas era of the late '40s and early '50s, Buscema left the field for a time for advertising. Soon after beginning the Marvel Age of Comics, however, Stan Lee himself recruited Buscema for the Bullpen. He began with a long run on Avengers, followed up with the long-anticipated first Silver Surfer series. When fellow legend Jack Kirby turned his talent toward DC Comics, Buscema took over art chores on Fantastic Four, Thor, and others. His bold, muscular pencil strokes commanded the comic-book page with realistic figure work that represented the next evolutionary step in post-Kirby Marvel Comics style. By the time of his retirement in 1996, Buscema had penciled nearly every Marvel title, and he periodically returned to accept select assignments until his death.
"Roger Stern is part of the holy trinity of Avengers writers, the other two being Roy Thomas and Kurt Busiek. Sure, there have been other good writers on the title, but these cats defined the team.
"The artwork by the team of John Buscema and Tom Palmer are great at providing powerful, hard-edged stuff. Their fight scenes are downright explosive." -- Kris Shaw
