A crusty, retired High Court Judge with time on his hands and years of suspicion in his mind, Sir Fennimore Truscott (Sir Alec Guinness-"Lawrence of Arabia," "A Passage to India," "The Bridge on the River Kwai"), seeks a different kind of justice as he suspects his debonair neighbor of having had an affair with Lady Margaret (Renee Asherson-"The Others," "Grey Owl"), the judge's attractive and independent wife.
While Sir Fenimore presents to the viewer, as the jury, his case for suspecting Tom Marjoriebanks (Paul Rogers-"The Return of the Native," "The Lady's Not For Burning") of seducing Lady Margaret many years before, a rare impending visit home by his son, Edwin, forces the judge's long-concealed fears into the open and he insists on having them addressed. As Sir Fenimore puts it, "Members of the Jury, the issue of parentage is always a painful one, but painful issues must be faced." Just who is the boy's father?
