The work seeks to fill the gap in the literature on treatment directives, or written documents in which a still competent patient refuses medical treatment under specified conditions to be followed in the event that his or her competence is compromised. This monograph analyzes the frequency of the directives in the Netherlands and their role in medical decision-making.
