This guide explains how to get the most out of the America Online community and the software you use to access it. Jennifer Watson documents AOL's features through version 4, focusing on versions 3 and 4. She notes the features that are available in each version and details differences between the Macintosh and Windows versions of the software. Watson also provides good coverage of AOL add-on software, such as Key Quencer, Window-to-Back, OneClick, AutoDialer, and other packages. However, it's clear that the author made some tradeoffs to accommodate the small-handbook format, as there's not much documentation of how to install and use software programs.
Once you have your software working properly, you can use AOL Companion to help you meet people and find information. Though other books present AOL and Internet resources more comprehensively, Watson does a fine job of telling how to find a relevant group, participate in it, and avoid the clutter that sometimes gives the online world a bad name. She emphasizes AOL's proprietary content, though you'll find some general Internet coverage, too.
The author's peppy blurbs about her online friends tend to be boring, and there is some incorrect stuff, such as an assertion that cookies keep servers from having to store too much information. But by and large, this is a good introductory text for new AOL users. --David Wall
