About the Author:

Patricia Hill Collins is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland, US.

Professor Solomos joined the Department of Sociology at City in 2001 as Professor of Sociology, having previously worked at Aston University, Warwick University, Birkbeck College, Southampton University and London Southbank University. His teaching is focused on the sociology of race and racism, sociological theory, human rights and social theory, qualitative research methods and multiculturalism and citizenship. He has supervised a wide range of PhD students in both his own areas of research interest and in other fields of sociology. He welcomes the opportunity to work with PhD students and is interested to receive informal inquiries from prospective research students. He is currently supervising students working on a range of issues, including migration and refugees, minority families and social capital, Turkish-speaking youth in London and Cuban music and popular culture. He serves on the Strategic Research Board of the Economic and Social Research Council. He is also active in the administration of the Department of Sociology and the School of Social Sciences at City. He is joint editor with Martin Bulmer of the international journal Ethnic and Racial Studies, published 12 times a year by Routledge.

Review:

The SAGE Handbook of Race and Ethnic Studies is one of the best handbooks outlining the latest thinking on race and ethnic studies published in recent years... The breadth of themes and the depth of discussion are ambitious, offering the reader an A-Z guide of contemporary thinking on race and ethnicity... a valuable resource for scholars and activists alike. (Runnymede Bulletin)

Why are racial and ethnic identities, along with racism and ethnic chauvinism, so tenacious in the contemporary world? Why do lines of racial and economic exclusion continue to converge? Do we have the appropriate analytical tools to make sense of the manner and purchase of race and ethnicity? This important handbook provides a clear, accessible and incisive survey of debate and research on such questions, at the heart of the burgeoning field of race and ethnicity studies. (Deborah Posel)

Hill Collins and Solomos have composed a compelling volume that speaks to the central issues of race and ethnicity today. They include a vibrant mix of established and emerging voices addressing the principal and pressing contemporary conceptual and theoretical questions regarding race and ethnicity. These include the ways in which race, class, gender and the nation are taken up in the dominant disciplines of the humanities and social sciences, law and critical race theory, family, religions, education, the state, repression and resistance. This is a collection both educators and researchers concerned with race and ethnicity will want to consult.

(David Theo Goldberg)

In the 21st century racism continues to be alive and kicking. This well written handbook, a landmark, situates a range of contemporary expressions of race, ethnicity, racism and resistance in a global context. Substantial chapters provide breadth, depth and clarity to questions that remain contested in spite of decennia of race critical research. Hill Collins and Solomos combine editorial excellence in producing a solid handbook with a concluding chapter mapping out the challenges for the 21st century. The SAGE Handbook of Race and Ethnic Studies is an absolutely recommendable source for students and scholars across the social sciences.
