Paintball and Airsoft Battle tactics is Chrsitopher Larsen's latest book that helps translate small unit battle tactics to paintball and airsoft, derived mainly from his previous book 'Light Infantry Tactics: Small Teams' The latter is already a must-read book for many airsoft players worldwide. This book covers many areas neede by the serious milsim ( military simulation ) player...Overall, the main sections of this book are developing individual skills, team battle drills, and team tactics. For 128 pages this book already covers more than enough topics for an airsoft team to follow in terms of participation in milsim events. Lrson writes that the individual skills that need to be developed are warrior skills and leadership ones. These should be taken seperatley and together as a leader withou warrior skills cannot motivate his team into action even with a sound battle plan. For most team members, warrior skills are important as these contain basic skills needed to survive and win in combat or in real life. Warrior skills cover camouflauge, hand signals, individual movment techniques, fighting positions, tactical communication, whilst leadership skills cover troop leading positions, pre-battle inspections, and after-cation review (AAR). My take on this is that the average airsofter developes the first four skills as he/she skirmishes along, with tactical communication being an afterthought. While the leadership skills in actual airsoft situations are on an impromptu basis.Only a tightly-integrated team with a chain of command can actually fully impliment these required warrior and leadership skills. In reality, many airsoft teams are informal orgonisations, gathering to play at weekends or days off and no practise is done to enhance battle tactics or skills....I will stress this again. This book is for the serious milism player and not for the casual airsoft player who just cares about doing the basic techniques of airsoft and not full blown field training exercises (FTE) where scenarios cover all the field trainig and battle plans the book covers. I totally agree with most of waht is written as these are validated tactics honed over thousnads of years of human conflict. But before one implements the elements of this book there are preconditions to be met: a cohesive and disciplined team; a clear chain of command and team responsibilities; a very regular team schedule;a commitment to practise all drills;a set of standarad operating procedures(SOP)....Any airsoftner who has had military experience will know having preconditions met leads towards a good team. However, with airsoft being mainly a recreational hobby for many players, this books searches for that niche of airsoft player who are heavily into milsim, a small but growing within the airsof community...this book shows that conflict, real or simulated, is won or lost by small units or larger groups in the form of platoons, companies, battalions, divisions, and armies...Easily understood by any reader who is intimidated by military doctrine or jargon, Larsen deals on the common-sense side of military battle tactics as applied to paintball and airsoft....read throguh the book, you will have flash backs of skirmishes in which you have developed tactcs and troop movements without realising that they are sound small team battle tactics such as flanking, hasty ambushes, movment to contact and group overwatches. But there is more to small team battle tactics and drills beside those. This book stresses the importance of security, tactical communications(not soley radio, but also verbal within and in between units)and one thing that is always ignored - reconnisance....I would recommend this book to all airsoft players since it contains almost everything you need to know to develope the skills to be an effective team or unit. --Popular Airsoft Magazine
I received this book 1 months ago. When I knew this book is written by Christopher Larsen, I know that this indeed would be the definitive guide to any airsoft or paintball player. If you don't understand what I mean, Chris Larsen is also the author of the book "Light Infantry Tactics: Small Teams", which already is a reference book for many airsoft players (..and quite possible, for real soldiers too). Many materials in "Paintball and Airsoft Battle Tactics" are derived from "Light Infantry Tactics...", but adjusted with airsoft & paintball players in mind. Nevertheless, the tactics and the battle-drills are the same regardless of whether you are fighting a real battle or just a wargame. The only difference are: the range of the weapons (and "weapons") and the lethality (and "lethality") involved are of course incomparable. Some of the materials in the book include: why and how to camouflage, handsignals techniques, leadership skills, infantry movement techniques, and battledrills for offensive, defensive and special operations. The methods explained typically apply to unit size from fireteam to platoon level. What this book differs from "Light Infantry Tactics" is on the emphasis to airsoft & paintball, taking into account the characteristics of both games. It also has a lot more schemes and color photographs which is very helpful in understanding the concepts. One of the many things I like very much from this book, is that it's written in an easily understood language to explain technical military concepts (if you ever read military references such as US Army Field Manuals etc, they usually tends to be heavily conceptual or technical AND voluminious- which can be quite intimidating to some). However there is some areas in this book that needs an improvement: a discussion about "human factor". I wish it had another chapter which discusses the human factor such as: morale, overcoming hesitation and fear, how to motivate teammates - a very critical element to mission success. Nonetheless, this book surely enhances our understanding on how to fight and how to fight as a team. Discuss and practice the materials with your teammates, and your team will benefit in battle. --Nanung Indonesia
