9780752441382: Frances Hodgson Burnett: The Author of the Secret Garden
Reseña del editor:

Most people have heard of "Little Lord Fauntleroy" and "The Secret Garden". Yet, few people realize that the same woman wrote both books, 25 years apart, and was considered, along with Henry James, as one of the leading writers in America on the strength of the adult novels which made her name in the 1870s and 1880s. Frances Hodgson Burnett, like the characters in her novels, experienced reversal of fortune, and knew extremes of poverty and wealth. Born in Manchester in 1849, she emigrated with her family to Tennessee at the close of the Civil War. While a successful writer, happiness always eluded her. Biographer Ann Thwaite reveals the inner torture experienced by the writer of one of our best-loved children's books. While the story of "The Secret Garden" remains an evocative and magical memory for many adults, the story of its creator will ensure that this classic is brought to life in a way that inspires the imagination as much as her delightful novels.

Biografía del autor:

Ann Thwaite was born of New Zealand parents in 1929. She was educated at St Hilda's College Oxford and has been a writer, biographer and reviewer all her life. She lives with her husband, the poet Anthony Thwaite, in Norfolk.
