9780738580159: Humboldt State University (Campus History)

Perched high atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the northernmost campus of the California State University system is celebrating its centennial. The natural environment of forests and oceans provide the perfect setting for hands-on research in forestry, oceanography, wildlife, natural resources, environmental science and resource engineering, and fisheries biology. Begun as a normal school for teacher education, it still provides a full range of credential programs and more than 40 majors for undergraduate and master's degrees in 14 areas, and it is a regional center for the arts. The university is at the forefront of studies on sustainability, green living, and environmental responsibility.

Review:

Title: Mendocino County resident commemorates Alma Mater in new photographic history

Author: Staff Writer

Publisher: Ukiah Daily Journal

Date: 07/31/2010
Covering almost 100 years, the new campus photo history book titled "Humboldt State University" shares the growth of the college on the hill over Arcata. A loyal alumna, Katy Tahja - who lives in Mendocino County - shares her love for her alma mater in this new book.
Every university has hundreds of photos in their archives and author Tahja hand-picked more than 200 vintage images to depict a century of progress. The book is arranged with chapters featuring the six presidents who guided Humboldt over the decades, areas of study, professors, social life on campus, sports and the physical beauty of the area.
Readers will discover photos showing campus reaction to serious themes like World War II and Vietnam, and silly events like Lumberjack Days and costume dances. Tahja tried to find photos never published before, and alumni sent in photos to be featured in the book.
Sometimes a student arrives at college just looking for an education and instead ends up falling in love for a lifetime with the campus, its teachers and the natural world surrounding it. That's what happened to alumna Katy Tahja and is why 43 years later she found a unique way to say "Thank You" to Humboldt State University.
Humboldt State University is available at the HSU Bookstore, independent book shops and other local retailers, as well as on-line at www.arcadiapublishing.com. The author has book signings planned for later in the year and welcomes speaking engagements.
Title: Humboldt State University Historian Commemorates Alma Mater in New Photographic History

Author: Staff Writer

Publisher: NewsWireToday

Date: 5/4/2010
Covering almost 100 years, the new campus photo history book titled Humboldt State University shares the growth of the college on the hill over Arcata. A loyal alumna, Katy Tahja shares her love for her alma mater in this new book debuting just in time for the May 2010 commencement ceremonies.
Tahja approached the university's administration proposing a new photo history of the campus produced in time to help celebrate the upcoming centennial in 2013. Having a friendship with University librarian Joan Berman for 30 years, the author knew there was a treasure trove of photos to access on campus. The summer of 2009 was spent sorting through thousands of images old and new to find 220 photographs that best told the history of the university. Add about 8,000 words of text and what exists is a delightful, informative look at the yesterdays of Humboldt State.
From the early years when each dorm room came with a wood burning stove, to the WWII years when blimps flew over a camouflage painted Founders Hall, from student protests in the 1960s, to a new sustainability graduation pledge for the new century, readers follow Humboldt State history through chapters devoted to each of the six presidents of the institution.
In 1967 the author was Kathleen Alban, a co-ed coming to Humboldt for several reasons. She jokes it was as far away as she could get from her parents and still stay in the California state higher education system. But she also wanted a natural world of green forests and rushing rivers and a campus small enough to develop personal relationships with her professors. At Humboldt State she found what she was looking for.
This book is available at the HSU Bookstore, independent local retailers, and on-line. A challenge is out to all Humboldt State alumni to find themselves in the photos in this book. Go Look!
