Heather E. Schwartz writes books for kids from her home in upstate New York. She loves writing because she loves learning new things, brainstorming creative ideas, and moving words around on a page. In her spare time, she runs a website for young writers (WriteintheMiddle.co). She also enjoys baking cookies in fun shapes, throwing holiday parties, walking in the woods, eating cider donuts, and spending time with her family.Review:
These well-designed titles encourage girls to get involved in sports and physical fitness. Each book is carefully structured with chapters discussing how the sport is played, the rules, teamwork, and health tips. Famous female athletes are profiled and a brief glossary defines the technical terms. Youngsters, especially reluctant readers, will be drawn to the vibrant photographs and large diagrams that aid novices in understanding the sport. --School Library Journal; Vol. 53, No. 7; Page 114, July 2007
Figure skating is a competitive sport, but you don t really play it. Schwartz emphasizes that skaters are athletes but also choreographers and artists. She invokes historic images of Sonja Henje and Dorothy Hamill (who learned on her brother s old hockey skates), but compared to other titles in this series, achieving the goal seems more like a dream. The easy to read text continues with a description of the basic skills and test levels in U.S. Figure Skating. There is also a section about warming up and off-ice conditioning. Overall, the showcased pros remain the main attraction, and the clear color photos of these champions will entice reluctant readers. The book concludes with a glossary and an index, and includes a short bibliography that gives step-by-step guidelines for using FactHound.com. This entertaining overview of a glamorous winter sport is one of six nonfiction titles in the Snap Books Girls Got Game series. --Childrens Literature Comprehensive Database, January 2007
