Take a bow, Mimi! More than anything in the world, Mimi wanted to be on stage—to sing, to dance, to act! But to sing, dance, and act, you had to be talented and beautiful. “And I’m not,” Mimi thought sadly. But Mimi has determination and spunk and perseverance. Will that be enough? Can she do it? Can Mimi become a star?

Born in Loeben, Austria, HELGA BANSCH has taught primary school and made marionettes for puppet theaters. Since 2003, she has lived in Vienna, working as an artist and running workshops for children. From Booklist:
Although Mimi longs to perform, she doubts that’s a reasonable goal for a mouse who lacks talent and beauty. But after a dance lesson with Misha the Frog and singing instruction from Bubbles the Blackbird, Calvin the Tailor helps her create a dress that makes her feel “REALLY pretty” for the first time. Even better, each friend gives her a comment or bit of advice that guides her later, when she steps on stage as a ballerina and faces an unexpected challenge. Although certain plot elements seem a bit dreamlike, this offers an optimistic take on life’s possibilities. Bansch, who is Austrian, illustrates the story in a series of well-composed, mixed-media illustrations that use color with warmth and subtlety. In dual horizontal panels on one page, Misha dances with the strength, discipline, and grace of a ballet dancer, while below, Mimi jumps about like a joyful child. A new take on an old theme.
