Boris Spassky, the Russian grandmaster, in 1969 beat Tigran Petrosian to become World Champion, thus avenging his narrow defeat three years earlier. Like his 1972 challenger Bobby Fischer, Spassky is a superb attacking player, one of the outstanding grandmasters of the century.
