9780712356473: The Methods of Sergeant Cluff (British Library Crime Classics)

After battling for justice, at great personal risk, in his first recorded case, Sergeant Caleb Cluff made a swift return to duty in this book. The story opens one wet and windy night, with the discovery of a young woman's corpse, lying face down on the cobblestones of a passageway in the Yorkshire town of Gunnarshaw. The deceased is Jane Trundle, an attractive girl who worked as an assistant in a chemist's shop. She yearned for the good life, and Cluff finds more money in her handbag than she would have earned in wages. There are echoes of Sherlock Holmes ('You know my methods, Watson') in the title, and in an exchange in the first chapter between Cluff and Superintendent Patterson, but Cluff is very much his own man. Little that goes on in and around the mean streets of Gunnarshaw escapes him. He is scornful of detectives who rely solely on supposed facts: 'More than facts were in question here, the intangible, invisible passions of human beings.' Understanding those passions leads him gradually towards the truth about Jane's murder.

About the Author:

GIL NORTH was the pseudonym of Geoffrey Horne (1916-1988), a writer from Skipton who worked as a civil servant in colonial Africa for many years, before returning to his native Yorkshire. The best-known of his novels are the eleven detective stories featuring Sergeant Cluff.

Review:

I like Cluff, well like is a funny word to describe a grumpy old man, but Cluff reminded me a little of Columbo a dog with a bone who never lets go until he gets a bite. And that’s what I like, the old fashioned who dunnit which is more than a why did they do it and how they did it. The writing style is unique and a bit old fashioned in one way but this is a cracking good mystery with Cluff really getting his teeth into the whys and wherefors. I would be happy to meet up with Cluff again and to me he's a very good character and an intriguing little man. This really brings the 1960s and the small Yorkshire setting to life and I will be seeking out more! (NetGalley)

A Sort of Anti-Cozy Sergeant Cluff is just about the least cozy investigator imaginable, and his Yorkshire village is about as dreary, damp, gray and grim as they come. Mostly, Cluff meanders about talking to people who might know something and seeing what there is to be seen. The effect is a bit rough around the edges, but that's Cluff, and that's a nice bit of change of pace. (NetGalley)

My main criticism is that these books are too short, but short is sweet, and I would recommend this series to fans of Morse, Sherlock and the like. They are not so much whodunnits as why are where's the evidence. (Carpe Libris)

This is an extraordinary book: set apart from more pedestrian detective novels by the irresistible quality and relentless pace of the writing. (NetGalley)
