This is a compilation of medieval book lists and catalogues from 34 houses of Augustinian canons. The volume also contains the most substantial of all surviving records of an English medieval library, the late 15th-century catalogue of Leicester Abbey, which records the contents of over 900 books. This catalogue bears witness to the intellectual, pastoral and devotional interests of a late medieval religious community. The book also includes important catalogues form Waltham Abbey and Lanthony Priory, as well as a 15th-century book list identified as being from Thurgarton Priory, the house of the English mystic, Walter Hilton.

From the introduction: "This volume contains an edition of the catalogues and booklists surviving from houses of Augustinian canons in England, including those of the independent congregations of Saint-Victor and Arrouaise; no such records are known to survive from Augustinian houses in Wales, from the tiny number of English houses of the congregation of Saint Sepulchre, or from Carlisle Cathedral, the only English cathedral community to live by the Augustinian rule.Between 200 and 250 houses of Augustinian canons were founded in England between the end of the eleventh century and the Dissolution (most had been established by the early thirteenth century), more than for any other single order in England. Yet, by contrast with what survives from the Benedictines, the number of identified Augustinian catalogues and lists of books is very small: leaving aside the reports of patristic and other texts from twenty-three English Augustinian houses included in Registrant, only forty-one records (many very brief) of books in the possession of thirty-four different Augustinian houses have thus far been identified, including a total of four from Victorine and Arrouaisian houses."
