Cristobal is a 16-year-old teenager who is mistakenly taken from his home on a November morning in 1908, and is thrown into an endless nightmare that will take him to remote places in Africa, France and South America. After surviving a crude and disastrous battle while fighting for the Spanish Army in Morocco, he manages to escape a certain death and flee across the Algerian desert. After a brief stay in France, Cristobal arrives in Ivory Coast, where he will serve for two years as foreman for a company dedicated to providing professional services for dangerous safaris. He returns to France just before World War I and lives a series of extraordinary experiences until an unexpected tragedy forces him to flee once again, this time as a stowaway on a ship to South America, where he settles until the end of his days.
