PreSchool-Grade 2. A rebus rendition of the now over-done holiday song. Each verse is presented opposite a full-page painting. As the song progresses, the figures from the illustrations become smaller rebus figures in the text. Bolam's vivid acrylic cartoons, depicting both humans and animals, are filled with humor and motion. The trees are striped, the birds are spotted, the "ladies dancing" have elbows sticking out, and the "lords a-leaping" cavort about with wigs popping off of their heads. Despite the cheerful paintings and the rebus format, this book is unnecessary, given the many worthy editions of this song available, most notably Robert Sabuda's brilliant pop-up (S & S, 1996) and Linnea Asplind Riley's version with beautifully crafted paper-cut illustrations (S & S, 1995). Save your book budget for something more original.
